By David Lee, Product Manager at Intelligent Banking Solutions
In my last post, I pushed back against vague marketing claims about “AI-powered collections” and showed how Carmen delivers real, tangible value. But there’s another question I hear often, and it’s an important one:
“If AI is this powerful, does it mean collectors are going to be replaced?”
The short answer: absolutely not. In fact, our entire approach at Intelligent Banking Solutions is built around a simple principle — AI should augment human talent, not replace it.
Why People Still Matter
Collections is more than data and process. At its heart, it’s about people having conversations. The empathy in a collector’s voice, the ability to negotiate, the trust built over time — no algorithm can replicate that.
Think about it: a customer facing financial hardship isn’t just a line in a database. They’re a person. Sometimes what makes the difference isn’t the timing of the call or the type of communication — it’s the compassion and professionalism of the person on the other end of the line.
That’s where collectors shine. And that’s why they’ll always matter.
How AI Augments Collectors
What Carmen does is take away the clutter and the guesswork so collectors can focus on those human conversations. Here’s how:
- Next-Best-Action Guidance – Instead of sifting through pages of notes, collectors get a two-sentence summary of what to do next.
- Queue Management – Instead of struggling with SQL or waiting on IT, collectors get the right accounts in front of them instantly.
- Script Suggestions – By analyzing past calls, Carmen can highlight what’s worked for top performers and suggest phrasing that leads to more promises kept.
The result isn’t fewer collectors. It’s more effective collectors. AI helps raise the floor — ensuring everyone on the team, from new hires to veterans, has the tools to perform at their best.
The Bigger Picture
Other vendors talk about “smart collectors” or “virtual collectors” as if a website or portal could replace the role entirely. We see it differently. Replacing people with software creates risk, frustration, and a colder customer experience.
Augmenting people with AI creates opportunity. It makes the work easier, more consistent, and more rewarding — both for the collector and for the customer.
Looking Ahead
AI isn’t here to eliminate jobs. It’s here to make them better. At IBS, we believe the future of collections is about human talent powered by smart tools.
In my next post, I’ll take on another big topic: compliance. I’ll explain how we’ve built Carmen in a secure, isolated environment that gives managers confidence their data is safe and compliant.
